The Kibera Kids Library
One room with a painted sun on the wall, in Kibera, near the CFK Tabitha Clinic. It opened on 16 April 2026. It is open because the walks pay for it.

What happens there
School finishes and most children go home to a room with no desk and no shelf, and often no light to read by. That is why I started this. It is one room with tables, chairs and books, and somebody who notices whether you came.
From 2pm to 8pm the room fills up with the after school programme. 50 children, the youngest about 4, doing homework, reading, drawing, asking for help when they are stuck.
It is not a school and I do not pretend it is. It is the room that makes school possible.
Kevin, Celin, Benta, Eastar and I run it between us. Five of us, nobody is paid. Konnect gives us the wifi for free.
The children on this page are photographed with their families' agreement. If a family would rather a picture came down, it comes down.
What it needs
Running this room costs 30,000 shillings a month, about $230. That is what the walks have to cover before anything else.
19 people on the walk pays for a month.
Books
The shelves fill up slowly. Storybooks in English and Kiswahili, and the textbooks that match what the schools are teaching this year.
The rent
I rent the room, every month, whether or not anybody booked a walk. This is the bill that decides whether the door opens.
